The Friendswood Independent School District (FISD) in Texas is actively considering a $163 million bond proposal. This is a significant investment aimed at improving and constructing new school facilities, thereby enhancing the learning environment for students.
According to Community Impact on May 15, 2025, a Citizen Advisory Committee (CAC) has worked for months, visiting existing facilities and making recommendations on priority projects. This proposal has been submitted to the school board.
Among the most important proposals are the complete reconstruction of two schools, Westwood Elementary and Bales Intermediate. Westwood is nearly 60 years old, and many believe the old structure no longer meets modern safety standards, especially as extreme weather in the Texas Gulf region can affect indoor air quality and environment.
In addition, the proposal includes significant renovations to sports facilities at Friendswood High School and reconstruction of the agricultural center. The agriculture program at FISD is very popular with nearly 545 students participating, but the current facility is too small and does not have enough space for student projects. Many students have to find places to raise animals far away or even hide them in home garages, violating residential regulations.
This bond proposal, if approved by voters, will lead to an increase in the school district’s tax rate. The annual increase is expected to range from $110 to $140 per $100,000 of home value, due to the increased debt of the school district to fund these projects.
Board members expressed initial support for the proposed priorities. One member emphasized that all projects are “very important and very necessary,” from ensuring safety at older schools to expanding opportunities for students in programs such as agriculture or sports.
The school district is planning detailed plans and will hold a workshop on June 2 for further discussion. The final date to formally approve the bond proposal for inclusion in the November ballot is August 18. The election is scheduled for November 4.
